Sector focus: Intellectual Property

Firms are actively investing in their IP practices, starting with impressive hires at the Partner level trickling down to the Associate level

Since starting my career in legal recruitment last December, the legal market has been incredibly busy with a huge number of roles coming across our team’s desk. In this active recruitment market, it also seems that candidates are reassessing their key considerations and motivations for making a move, with lots of emphasis given to the cultural fit of a firm and their policies on flexible working rather than simply salary and hours.

The Intellectual Property market is a particularly interesting one where we are continuing to see lots of movement, with a range of firms recruiting across all levels and huge amounts of growth across teams. Lots of firms are actively investing in their IP practices, starting with some very impressive hires at the Partner level and now trickling down to a build at the Associate level. This is across both the non-contentious and contentious practices and in both soft IP and patents.

Despite the perceived turmoil, the IP space is continuing to offer really interesting opportunities, including prospects for more Senior candidates looking for a clearer route to partnership and Junior lawyers looking to increase their client exposure.

With the market being so much in a candidate’s favour, it is a great chance for lawyers of all levels to consider what they want from their career and whether their existing role aligns with those aspirations, or whether it is worth exploring other roles in the market.

At RedLaw Recruitment, we work with the full range of firms from London boutiques to elite US. If you are considering a move or wish to have an informal conversation regarding the market and opportunities available at your level, please get in touch for more details.
